Cardiff City 0 Newcastle United 1Match Programme

The Cardiff City Stadium

Sunday 13th September Kick-off 2:05pm

Welsh Raid Successful 1-0

Sixth Championship Game of the season and a fifth win and fifth clean sheet from the Toon. The only goal of the game came in the 18th minute when Fabricio Coloccini headed home the winner following a corner that was only partially cleared, Ryan Taylor crossed it back in and in it went. This was the first goal by the £10.3m Argentine international since his arrival at the club back on August 15th, 2008.

Newcastle United climbed back to the top of the Championship after ending Cardiff's unbeaten home start at the new Cardiff City Stadium.

The rest of the match Newcastle sat back and let Cardiff try and break them down all to no avail. The defence lined up as the previous match except for Coloccini returning to the side following international duty. Geremi made way for Fabricio and Ryan Taylor moved into midfield. Nile Ranger started up front as the lone striker and the midfield was packed out with Joey Barton starting on the left. With Ryan Taylor in the five man holding formation it worked. The home side were unable to break Newcastle, the shot count may have been high but Steve Harper in goal had very little to so. On the occasion's when he was called upon he dominated his box.

The yellow stripes were worn again, and the winning habit continued. A successful 2nd kit at last. The sun shone and Newcastle put on a display on Sky TV which would have been noted by every other championship team, Newcastle are hard to beat. Injuries will blight our squad soon however at the moment we are flying.

Alan Smith turned in another captain's performance, holding up just in front of the centre half's and battling with anyone who came near from Cardiff. A late second yellow card for a foul on the edge of the box means he will miss the Blackpool match on Wednesday. His energy and industrial display made him my man of the match again. nicky Butt sat on the bench watching on, and will make a sound replacement for Alan come Wednesday evening.

Chris Hughton having picked up the manager of the month award must have been dreading the match, as all recipients seems to fall on their swords soon after. Today, he really did not have to worry the team put the effort ion and reaped the rewards and accolades.

Ex mad Michael Chopra tried all day to add to his seven goals that has seen Cardiff go top of the league in August. Steven Taylor and goalscorer Fabricio Coloccini did enough to stifle Michael attempts on goal. The game was being played at a blistering tempo and with Newcastle perfectly executing a pressing tactic high up the field, it ensured that Cardiff were unable to play their usual composed passing game and as a result really struggled to find any kind of foothold in the match.

After early vocal exchanges with the Cardiff faithful, the traveling Toon Army dominated proceedings after the goal and could be heard all afternoon while the Blues reflected on their defeat.

Caretaker Manager Comments: Chris Hughton

"These are very tough games for us, but we limited Cardiff to only a few chances throughout the game. I think Alan Smith was very unlucky to be sent off, and possibly his reputation went before him. He is in the thick of most things in the centre of midfield, and that is probably why he is singled out more than others. The games are coming thick and fast, but we now have to maintain the impetus as we have started well. It will be a few weeks before we know exactly how we are doing."

Cardiff Manager Dave Jones Comments:

"We made the mistake in the first half and probably the only mistake in the whole game which has cost us. When you play top teams, that's what happens. They are one of the top teams in this division and I can't remember anything they had to do. Maybe we needed a little bit more better quality in our crosses and maybe better quality in our free kicks and around the area."
