Increased Level of Competitiveness

"We've seen as the pre-season goes by that the level of competitiveness in training has increased. But that is what you want. The closer we get to the start of the season the more the players want to stake their claim for a starting place. We're only two weeks away now and, as it stands, we've got a good number of players to choose from. You've seen in our friendly matches how many players we've used, and a lot of them are top, top players with experience at the highest level as well. Their approach in training and matches has been fantastic - I can't fault it. I think that shows they're up for the challenge and want to get this club back into the Premier League as soon as possible."

Obafemi Martins and Sebastien Bassong Doubts

"We need to go through the lads in the next couple of days and assess any little problems, then we'll make a decision. We need to assess Sebastien Bassong because he came back late, but Oba Martins will certainly have some involvement, and I think Geremi will be involved."

"It's a blow - a big blow, Not only he is a fabulous player, he doesn't miss many games and he's an excellent personality to have around the dressing room. Of course, he will still be around but he's the kind of player that you want out there on the pitch. We haven't really had any injuries in pre-season and it was fairly innocuous, so it is disappointing."
