Goals Galore
Carling Cup 2nd Round
Three one down and Newcastle come back to win 4-3 against Huddersfield in the Carling Cup 2nd Round at St James' Park. Kevin Nolan scored the winner on the night.
Full debuts for three Newcastle United youngsters for tonight's visit of Huddersfield Town. Hungarian defender Tamas Kadar, Congolese midfielder Kazenga LuaLua and England Under-19 striker Nile Ranger all start a match for the first time, while Dutch goalkeeper Tim Krul is making his home debut. Slovenian starlet Haris Vuckic is named among the substitutes for the first time.
Three was the number tonight as three goals went in the first half with Newcastle scoring only one of them. Robsinson of Huddersfield grabbed two goals, one from the penalty spot, a bit of a debatable decision by Mr Bates with Krul getting booked when it looked like the Huddersfield players dived over Timmy.
The second half opened up with two goals within three minutes of the restart. Huddersfield went further ahead within two minutes of the restart when Rhodes collected Danny Drinkwater's long ball and skipped around the advancing goalkeeper to score from a tight angle.
Geremi went straight back down the other end and scored from twelve yards after Nile Ranger had set him up.
Shola Ameobi on for Nicky Butt at half time scored from the spot. 3-3 after being tripped up.
Ameobi headed a 77th-minute Ryan Taylor just over as the we looked for a winner, and it took a fine block by Joe Skarz to deny Nile Ranger from point-blank range three minutes later.
Kevin Nolan who scored first first goal on saturday at the Palace, scored the winner in the 84th minute. Shola Ameobi provided the ammunition for Kevin to fire home. Shola Ameobi (Groin) and Jonas Gutierrez (Hamstring) limped off a few minutes later, oh injury worries.
A crowd of 23,815 was ten thousand more than any match on Tuesday night except for West Ham who had 500 more, however did they come to watch the game! In the crowd was Steve Harmisson following his successful return to test match cricket against Australia and winning the Ashes again.
The third round draw is Live on Sky Sports News on Saturday at noon.
Caretaker Manager Comments: Chris Hughton
talking to nufcTV
"Testament to Huddersfield - they pushed us all the way, and we didn't expect anything else. We always knew it was going to be a tough tie. But we felt that to go on and win the game we had to bring on some experience and quality. Certainly, for the neutrals, they would have thoroughly enjoyed that; and the Newcastle supporters more because we came out on top at the end. It was a typical cup-tie but I was pleased that we came out winners - and I thought over the 90 minutes we were worthy winners."
on injured duo
"Hopefully they will be okay. Shola felt his ankle slightly and made a decision to come off. Jonas just felt his hamstring slightly again but we are not even sure it's an actual pull. That's the good news, though we will assess them in the morning. Where we are at the moment, we need all the players available that we can."
on Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini
"I left them out of today's game and they will be perfectly fit and able for Monday's game,"
on Kevin Nolan
"Kevin is somebody who has an eye for goal and knows that he has to get himself into those positions on a more regular basis, But the role he's playing at the moment has allowed him to do that and we hope the goals continue. It was a fantastic relief to see him pop up and turn in Shola's knockdown for the winner. But, apart from the goal, I thought as a senior player the role he played was excellent and he was key in getting the win."

"It's been a very, very good cup-tie played with high intensity and quality play from both sides at times. Both sides made a massive contribution. Even at 3-1, I knew there was a massive threat from Newcastle. I just wish our lads could have held on a bit longer and cause some frustration around the stadium. You haven't got to get excited and look for a fourth and fifth goal. You have to make sure the crowd gets a bit agitated, but Newcastle got their second goal and had their tails up. I knew there was going to be turns in the game and the fact that Chris (Hughton) made the decision to bring the likes of Shola and Gutierrez on shows they were concerned. Shola is playing with a lot of confidence and is proving to be a handful.
Chris and Colin have done a magnificent job to focus the players - and the players have to take credit as well. With all that's happening around the club, they have focused on the job in hand. And they have got to do their job and hopefully get them back in the Premier League. Obviously, we (Terry McDermott, Derek Fazackerley and Paul Stephenson) have a huge affinity with this football club. If we were going to get drawn away from home, then this is the one we wanted."

Goalscorer Kevin Nolan Comments
he said to The Chronicle
“It felt very nice to get the winner. It’s always great to get a two yard tap-in, but Shola did fantastic for me. I’m delighted to get on the scoresheet again. Hopefully it will continue, not just my goal streak but the win streak. That’s the main thing. We’re all delighted with the win. You always enjoy it more when you win like that. We could have made it a bit easier for ourselves, but we’re just delighted to be in the next round.
The young lads did really well. They showed a lot of character so we’re pleased with all of them. They all deserved to be on the winning side.”
