Killer 'Goals' Touch Needed

Chris Hughton talking to nufcTV

"Damien Duff's goal against West Brom was a good move and a great finish and I think that's what we missed in certain periods of the game.

At times our football was good and we moved the ball well across the park but, as we showed with goal, it's the final piece of quality and guile that counts.

That's something we have to work on over the coming weeks.

We've got the players to hurt teams and in this division you need goals, and lots of them, to get out of it."

Carling Cup 2nd Round Draw

Newcastle start out against Lee Clark's Huddersfield Town at Home

Huddersfield striker Jordan Rhodes scored twice as his side beat Stockport in the first round of the Carling Cup by three goals to one at home. Lee Clark said "First half we played football but we played too much without any end product and overcomplicated things at times. "I thought certainly in the second half some of the football was of the highest quality the only blip was the goal at the end.

The Game will be played week starting 24th of August.

Youngsters Torn A Strip

Alan Thompson Reserves Manager talking to nufcTV

"You haven't made it yet.

We knew it would be a test and that's why we came. There were a lot of lads in the Leeds team who have played well over 100 hundred games in their career.

"But we didn't match the levels that they showed, whether it be in possession of the ball or defensively.

"It's okay judging yourself during pre-season against non-league teams, but when you come up against full-time footballers who have had careers in the game it's maybe a little wake-up call to our lads to see where they want to be.

If they learn from it then fair enough, but if they don't then good luck to them.

We're here to try to help them and if they don't want to take our advice then what can we do?

But hopefully they will go away and think about it and learn from the game.

Tresor Kandol came on and scored four goals and he can't get anywhere near their first team.

That tells you what our lads have to do if they want to make it. They might think they're professional footballers now, at 19 or 20 years old, but if they want to make a long career from the game then they're going to have to get used to coming up against players like that and be able to handle it."

Shola Wants To Lighten The Mood

talking to The Journal

“The players that have been left behind have character and we are determined to make the best out of a bad situation, We are going to need plenty of that this season, we have to keep that up. We’ve got to be strong and concentrate on what we can do to improve things at this football club.

Everyone wants to see how we are going to react to relegation. But as players we know we have to stand up for ourselves and show what we are about on the pitch. It doesn’t matter what else is going on, the only place we can do anything to show people that we’re not feeling sorry for ourselves is on a match day. It’s been good to see how the lads have pulled together in the dressing room in the circumstances. The players can’t affect anything to do with the takeover.

Whatever goes on outside, it will happen. Things will get sorted eventually, we just have to focus on what we have to do and that’s win games. It’s been a good start, not a great start, but there is something to build on and that is the pleasing thing.

“I’m feeling stronger than I have done in a while. I’ve had a good pre-season and although I got the flu towards the end, it’s been good for me to get that under my belt. It was tough at time against West Brom because I hadn’t really trained the week before, but we haven’t got many players and we have to dig in out there.

I hope my physical problems are behind me now because it has been one thing after the other for me the last few years. I just want to stay healthy and help the team get out of this league."
