Obafemi Martins Departs to Germany

Wolfsburg have announced the signing of Obafemi Martins on a four-year contract from Newcastle. The Bundesliga champions agreed an undisclosed fee with the Magpies earlier this week reported to be in the region of €10.5million (£9m).

The transfer has now been finalised to bring to an end Martins' three-year stint at St James' Park. Newcastle beat off competition from a number of other clubs to capture the Nigerian striker from Inter Milan in 2006. He enjoyed patches of good form but was not able to keep Newcastle in the Premier League last season and speculation over his future has been rife all summer. Martins will now hope to establish himself as a regular member of the Wolfsburg side but will have to vie with Grafite and Edin Dzeko for a spot.

"He is just the type of player that we were looking for to complement Grafite and Edin Dzeko," said Wolfsburg boss Armin Veh. "He is not only quick, but he has also proven how dangerous he is in front of goal."

Martins added: "I am delighted the transfer has gone through. The Bundesliga is one of the strongest leagues in the world and I am happy to be able to play for the defending Bundesliga champions. "This is going to be a great challenge."

Huddeersfield Seconds

From the Press Association, Thursday:

The Football Association is to investigate the trouble which flared during and after Tuesday night's friendly clash between Huddersfield and Newcastle. Match referee Jon Moss has included details of the bust-ups in his report, and disciplinary chiefs are now looking into the matter.

An FA spokesman said: "It has been reported to us and we are looking into it."

Up to 20 players were involved in a melee at half-time in the game at the Galpharm Stadium after Magpies defender Habib Beye and Terriers counterpart Andy Butler and then skipper Peter Clarke became embroiled in a heated exchange.

That incident is understood to have continued in the tunnel, and there were unseemly scenes too on the final whistle with Fabricio Coloccini and Lee Novak locking horns.
